Device Policy at Westheights (updated September 2024)
In compliance with Ministry of Education’s Policy/Program Memorandum 128 and in accordance with research and the lived experiences of our staff and students, cellphones and Apple watches are not permitted at Westheights. We understand that families may need to contact their children outside of school hours, so cell phones may be kept in lockers. Their use is not permitted anywhere on school grounds, inside or outside of our buildings. The only exception is for students who require cell phones or Apple watches as part of their Special Education programming or medical needs. Both require formal written documentation from a community professional and/or be included in a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Students violating this policy will have their phones/Apple watches kept in the office all day. If a student has had their phone confiscated more than two times, the phone will be kept in the office until a guardian comes to retrieve it, at which time a meeting will be set up with the student’s administrator
- Parents/Guardians, please call the school if you need to contact your child. If anything urgent needs to be shared with your child, this message can be transmitted very quickly through a call into the classroom from our office staff.
Dress Code
Westheights aims to provide staff and students with a learning environment that is safe, equitable, welcoming, and inclusive. We recognize that decisions about dress and headwear reflect individual expressions of identity, socio-cultural norms, economic factors, and that these are personal and important factors to a person’s well-being and health. Clothing that reveals undergarments, promotes or symbolizes drugs/alcohol, illegal activity, hate or discrimination, profanity, pornography, incites violence or harassment, or threatens health and safety will be addressed by administration.
